Why, breakfast is easy. Porridge in a bottle!
Ok. That sounds really weird and possible not that appetising, so lets explain!
DH catches a very early bus in to town for work every day. He doesn’t really have time for breakfast before he leaves, and it’s expensive to buy a take-away breakfast each morning. Snack bars and power drinks are full of preservatives, not to mention sugar, and get costly over a year. He was taking sachets of instant porridge in, but they weren’t cheap and still required some to-ing and fro-ing in the tea room at work.
I came across this link on Pinterest – Make Ahead Oatmeal Smoothies, from The Yummy Life, and was intrigued. Happy to give it a go, DH was my guinea pig!
I am really surprised by how easy they are to make, and how much they have become a part of my nightly routine. Just a few minutes of measuring and whizzing, and his little insulated bottle is in the fridge, ready for him to grab on his way out the door in the morning. He loves them, they fill him up, and I’m happy he’s eating well. He often skips lunch (naughty boy) or has to eat on the run, so at least he’s getting some good nourishing food into him at the start of the day.
Some of our favourite additives are fresh strawberries, dried cranberries, or these clever little tubs of fresh fruit and syrup. In a pinch, a couple of spoons of jam will provide enough flavour that you’re not eating plain porridge-y yoghurt. Sweeten as necessary with a spoonful of honey, and it’s really good for you as well as being delicious!
The trick, apparently, is in the long soaking time which takes the place of “cooking” the oats. DH says it’s best given a quick shake before you drink, otherwise it tends to be a bit “sludgy” down the bottom of the bottle.
If you give it a go, let me know what flavours you discover!
